It has been awhile since I last posted. School has begun (again) and this semester seems tougher than the last. Chemistry and Life Sciences without any Physics might be one reason behind that but I also feel like I've slowed down quite a bit over the short holidays. I'm taking some time to get back to the routine I managed to keep up last semester. I hope to stay on top of my work this semester because falling back is never going to be healthy.

The more I listen to Coldplay, the more that I think that they are one of the awesomest bands around right now. It really gets to me. (:

I feel like I'm procrastinating by blogging now. :|

One Semester Down.

Exams are over and the short vacation is here. I feel like I handled exam stress better than I had before but I'm not too optimistic over the results as the exams themselves were a challenge beyond my initial expectations. I just hope it won't be the worst.

Moving on to the vacation period, I have moved out of Tembusu and it is awfully boring now. Maybe it is a sign that I should start preparing for next semester. The vacation is very short anyway.

I'm staying over at least till my first two papers are over. Maths and Waves are daunting. Organic Chemistry is a little bit unfamiliar too. I'm going to use this weekend for Maths and Chem. Since there are no more classes I hope to maximise the contiguous time that I have at hand to squeeze more out of myself...

Surprisingly lazy today but I know that Finals are just two weeks away. I at least hope to get something done in the afternoon. Contemplating moving out to Science library just to try and get myself to work. Have made some progress with my final paper for IEM but still have many more ideas that I am not able to put in words yet. Hopefully I can get it done in a nice way. I'll try to do some Physics in the afternoon and then try Maths or Chem. Have to start the intense mugging for Chem because it is a closed book exam and there is a lot to memorise (especially Organic Chem). There is no new lecture/content for Chem and Maths and that is good for my revision this week.

Two weeks to reading week. I look dead and buried at this point but I hope to keep it going. Was terribly disappointed with my careless mistake for Maths assignment 3 and my incapacity to implement an error controlled solution for the Computing assignment. I hope to get the Chemistry Assignment done today so that I may use the rest of the weekend to focus on the Waves quiz, Stats assignment, Maths assignment 4 and IEM presentation. It gets crazier each week but the end of the first semester is near enough to keep me going. I hope all turns out well...

This week is e-Learning week for all Science modules and that includes my Chemistry, Physics and Maths modules. So I've been in my room for much the week so far trying to study and watch webcasts. I feel that this may be a convenient break to look at my modules as a whole and consider the big picture. A great win for Bayern this weekend was the perfect preparation for the Man City game later this week. Arjen Robben looked as awesome as ever in the 10mins he was on the pitch and I hope he can replicate this sort of magic midweek.

Cramer's Rule

Today I've been trying to program the generalised version of Cramer's rule in C. I am still stuck with the logic but and am very interested to try this out. It seems quite mechanical at this point as the proof for this rule is already well established but I hope to get a sense of using 2-d arrays to represent matrices. It took me awhile to figure out the parameters of my array to begin with and it will be even more difficult to find the determinant of this (I have not tried this yet).

School has been going well for the past few days. There hasn't been much to trouble me yet but it is only the second week. ESP1107 seems very interesting and I think I would be more willing to learn maths in a programming context. The PC1433 lecture tomorrow seems to be the most daunting of all. Reading the notes, I have realised that my understanding of mechanics has been far too simplistic but I am still very interested and curious to get this right.

School Starts...

School officially started today. I've had much fun in Tembusu so far. While the atmosphere while I'm in Tembusu is still good it is slowly creeping up on me that I have to be reading ahead each week and preparing for lectures/tutorials. ESP1107 was a good lesson to start with but I am overwhelmed by the prospect of intense maths and physics in my other modules. Reading the MA1507 notes and despite the fact that it is titled as a 'review', I do not seem to follow much and I hope that the lecture would be clearer.

Also, today was the first Master's Tea and it was a sensational eye opener. Dr Chhem was particularly personable, honest and humble. I was impressed and now look forward to the next one.

Today was a little bit boring alone in my room but I hope to get some reading done tonight. Classes start on Thursday and even the introductions on the lecture notes seem daunting enough. Calculus and Mechanics seem to draw on the 'A' Level curriculum and maybe that won't be so bad. I'm not sure if should buy textbooks though as I don't know how often I will refer to them.

First Week in Tembusu College

O-week is officially over and probably for only the second time (after the first TA orientation) I had much fun. In the short span of four days I met some really wonderful people whom I hope to keep up with for the next two years. And I'm very excited to see out the remaining two years because UTown as a whole seems to be very friendly and very conducive for mugging (which I'll really need).

On the other hand, classes start next week and I feel the urge to start preparing right now. My Physics and Maths are a little bit behind where I want to be but I hope to use the next few days to prepare myself, especially since the lecture notes and tutorials are starting to come out.

Bayern open their campaign tonight against Gladbach who survived the relegation play-off last season. Gladbach were one of the stronger teams in the 80's but are nowhere near that level now and I hope Bayern can make a bright start to avoid the disappointment of last season.

Lastly, since I'll be a little bit more lonely in my own room now I hope to start regular blogging again like I used to when I was in school.

I just accepted the offer to stay at UTown which sounds exciting. There are just about two weeks to the start of school. I am slightly overwhelmed by that since I have not kept up with my studies in the past two and a half years. Much of it is still a blur and I can't bring myself to think that I will be going at it for the next four years after this long break. Hopefully the environment will be supportive of this necessary change in attitude and I won't be left behind...

Past Three Months

It's been about three months since the last post. I have always rambled on about how bland or uneventful my life has been and if that were not the case anymore, then I have become very much more reclusive. The only points of note in these past months is that I got a temporary job (not for much longer though) and I'm nowhere near prepared for school in slightly more than a month's time. Chemistry and Maths are of particular worry.

I am still having some difficulty in finding the right words to express myself. I am very confused about many other things in our world and my life but I can't find anyone other than myself to relate to on these points. I don't know where this will lead me to but hopefully I will find some clarity.

Also, I feel like starting a blog in Tamil for no one to read...

Moving Up?

As some sort of consolation or respite, Bayern just beat Hamburg 6-0 at the Allianz Arena. Some really good stuff from Arjen Robben who bagged a hattrick. Ribery was in good form too scoring one and forcing an own goal at the death. This is the sort of football that we can produce but have failed to do so consistently this season. Looking ahead it will be important to shut out Inter at home this week. And then, we need to avoid the big teams in the draw for the next round (I hope for Shaktar or Marseille if they make it through). Also now that we are essentially competing in Europe as a league for places in future competitions, it is important that we avoid Schalke this time round although they seem to be one of weaker teams left in the competition.

A Long Overdue Post.

I'm back here to vent my frustrations over the recent slump in FC Bayern's already beleaguered season. Three defeats in a row does not bode well and we have now slipped out of the Champions League spots after the most recent defeat to Hannover (who have now leapfrogged above us in the table). Dortmund have shown incredible consistency in the league this season and you can't deny that they deserve the title. We have gained some momentum as Robben and Ribery return to full fitness. Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller have also been impressive throughout the season but this has not translated to results. So where has it all gone wrong?

One thing I need to add, perhaps on a more positive note, is that The Bundesliga will have one more place in the UEFA Champions League starting 2011-12 (qualification to the 2012-13 competions). It almost happened last year but Inter beat Bayern in the UCL final to save the Serie A for one more season.

Lastly, there seems to be a very interesting match in prospect tomorrow and I'm eager to see if Arsenal can put their recent woes behind them and progress against Barca.

I think I'd like to start blogging more consistently. This is because I have slightly more time on my hands right now but also, looking back at some of the older posts, it has occurred to me that my posts have helped significantly in my process of introspection.

The German Bundesliga has taken a break but I can't wait for it to restart because Bayern are finally building some momentum and Robben is expected to return. We beat Stuttgart twice recently and although those were not the most convincing performances it showed that we can still find ways to win even when we're not playing at our best. Realistically, what we are playing for in the league is second place and an automatic place in next season's Champions League. Dortmund are the runaway leaders and it is hard to see them lose the title (though not impossible).

It has been awhile since I last posted something. I really need to start planning for the next six months...

FC Bayern have struggled domestically this season but I am not too worried about the 12-point gap to Dortmund yet. It is still relatively early in the season and history has shown that the league is too competitive to be decided so early. There are many good teams in the league who would cause 'upsets' (such as the 6-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen this week by Stuttgart who were in the bottom three).

And Sweet Serendipity by Lee DeWyze is a very catchy/addictive song.

It feels like this blog died but I think that I have just momentarily run out of things to say. Three things that I'd like to point out that would hopefully give me something to say are:

1. Start of the new football season. FC Bayern have won one and lost one in the league but I hope that they'd get things straight, especially in Europe.

2. Start of a new HIMYM season in late Sep. This season could be the last and we're bound to see many hints relating to the mother,

3. The culmination of the F1 season with some very interesting races to go. It's just too close to call this time. It's in Italy this week and then Singapore.

I realised that I have not blogged in a very long. And then I realised that my life hasn't really moved from the last time I blogged. The only thing that has had my attention recently is the World Cup and Germany are living up to their reputation of performing well and making it far in World Cups. Though they have only won it 3 times they have reached at least the semis 11 (in 16 appearances) times including the past two.

Bayern virtually sealed the league title today. And next week's match against relegated Hertha BSC seems to be the perfect match ahead of the two massive finals we have coming up. Firstly, it will be the DFB Pokal final against Werder Bremen and that will be followed by the showdown with Inter Milan. Considering the poor start we had (struggling to get out of the group stage of the Champions League and poor run of results in the league), it is beyond amazing that we're on the verge of a historic treble.

I guess I haven't blogged in awhile and there is some catching up to do here.

1. The draw against Gladbach last weekend was disappointing but the impressive result midweek more than made up for that. We still top the table, albeit on goal difference and we're in the finals of the DFB Pokal and the Champions League. The added bonus this week is that the Bundesliga is on the verge of overtaking third placed Serie A in the UEFA league coefficients. That means that from next season onwards the German teams will compete for four Champions League places while the Italians will have to settle for three. If FC Bayern win on 22nd May or Hamburg make the Europa League final tonight, it will all be confirmed.

CL 09/10 QF Build-Up...

This will be a boring post to some/most out there...

Messi single handedly won the game for Barca last night. Scoring four in a CL Quarter-final is amazing and this 22-year still has a long way to go.

More importantly, at least for me, is the Bayern match tonight. There has been much interest in the build-up, especially regarding the possible return of Rooney and Robben. However, what caught my attention the most was the mind games from the two coaches. According to Soccernet, Sir Alex feels that Ribery is 'no faster' than Neville and is confident that the vast experience his team have in this competition is more than enough to cope with the threats Bayern pose. Van Gaal on the other hand has been keen to stick to the underdog status and has singled out Berbatov as a player to watch in the absence on Rooney. While I am disgusted by the arrogance of Sir Alex, I felt that the comments of van Gaal were shrewd as it put pressure on Man Utd to overturn the deficit and for the off-form Berbatov to perform. Bayern definitely have some leverage in this tie as they have the lead from the first leg and we certainly have a good chance of progressing. It's our best chance since last winning the CL in 2001 to make the semi-finals/final again. Man Utd definitely have a good enough team to see us off but I hope that the magic of Ribery and Robben can produce some away goals to keep United under pressure throughout the match.

Well, Bayern are back on top in the league and I'm looking forward to Robben's return in the second leg of the Champions League. Surprisingly, he was not risked in the top of the table clash with Schalke and we managed to win without him and without Altintop who was sent off just before half time. Maybe we won't win in Manchester but I I hope we'll do enough to progress. A score draw looks likely for me.

Firstly, FC Bayern won. Beyond the fact that it gives us a good chance to progress, there is always an element of pride in big matches and it was satisfying that we won the game at home. I would hope that Robben is fit for the second leg and that'll give us a better chance of cancelling out the away goal. The tie seems even now after Man Utd were heavily favoured in the build up.

I was hoping that we would draw CSKA Moscow but it didn't happen. It's a tough ask to beat Man Utd but I still think it's possible for us to edge it with a solid performance at home and an away goal or two. Robben has to be the key player for us. I also hope for more diversity in the last four this year and it's nice to know that a French team will be there.

I read about the Monty Hall problem in a book today and it was surprising. Trying to understand significance of ignorance or lack of knowledge in probabilistic problems is difficult and I still can't get my head around it...

The Bundesliga returns tomorrow. Bayern will play Hoffenheim and it looks promising for Bayern. We are still in the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal and despite the shortcomings of the first half of the season, it's still a good position to be in. I hope that this isn't another false dawn (as was the case with Klinsmann last season)...

I passed my FTT yesterday but I still have no clue what's in the last third of the book. I thought I was under-prepared but the questions were a little bit in my favour and I managed to pass. I was thoroughly surprised by that and that brought some relief in an otherwise exhausting week. I'm glad I have this weekend now to get some sleep. And I get to start all over again on Monday. I just hope I don't lose my mind before December.

So in two days time I'll be in Sweden and heading to Germany... And I won't see most people till the new year. I'm pretty excited about the trip. I'll finally get my time in Munich and Berlin. I'll also get to visit Stockholm and Kiruna... I'm looking forward to it... (:

However, before all that fun, I still have to see out 1,5 days which I hope won't be too much for me to handle.

It was our third straight win in the league and the gap to the top is now down to TWO points. We're back in it and van Gaal has turned it around just in time. I'm impressed by the partnership of Olic and Gomez. Now I hope we won't lose it over the long winter break...

It was an interesting weekend in the Bundesliga as Bayern are seemingly back in the title race. Although Bayern's performances throughout the season have been disappointing, a string of just two wins was able to lift us into fourth, four points off leaders Leverkusen. I'm cautiously optimistic that this could be the start of a good spell. The most important task at hand is to beat Juventus on Tuesday night to qualify for the R16 of the Champions League.

And I realised I have about 5 more days to work for this year and I'll be on leave the rest of the time... Feels pretty good. (:
